Prairie des Femmes poem circa 2006

I wrote this poem a few weeks after we were married when my husband went on a little tour and left me alone in the Prairie des Femmes for the first time.

This blog is documentation of the landscape of La Prairie des Femmes, Louisiana, an unincorporated community in south Louisiana. In this nearly hidden place, you will find photographs of the prairies of Louisiana, collected theories and documentation of the origins of the place name Prairie des Femmes, pictures of Mary statues of Acadiana and beyond, herbal remedies, original writing and French music, homages to the triangle or t-fer, French memes and ecards, clips from La Tasse de Cafe Radio Program out of Ville Platte, La., as well as other information on my experience as a young person with a real, living Louisiana Francophone culture. I am a mother, wife, Evangeline Parish native and resident of la Prairie des Femmes, Louisiana.

I wanna ask you something

I wanna ask you somethin'
Have you ever taken a catfish
And deboned it at the first vertebrae
Cut the lips off
Take the top
And de-jaw, dejoint it, the mouth
Turn it side-down and clean it
Let the ants get it out...
And see the crucifix?

Huitres Bien Rares

Slave drowned in the Bayou Bourbeaux

Opelousas Courier dated 10 May 1856 page 2
On Sunday last, before noon.Mr Francois Toussaint Quebedeau of this parish
with 3 slaves left Grand Coteau for Prairie des Femmes. When they came to
Bayou Bourbeux, they attempted to cross but the bridge being entirely under
water, they tried to cross in a little flat. The flat was in such a condition
that in a few seconds it was full of water and sank. Mr. Quebedeau and a
slave belonging to Joseph P. Collomb were drowned. One of the other negroes
came very near to losing his life but was rescued by the third Negro.

Since we find a record of Succession of a Francois Quebedeau married Eliza
Marks; and Francois' marriage record to Eliza Marks where his parents are
identified as Francois Quebedeaux and Celeste LaGrange, then we may be able
to assume that the Francois Toussaint Quebedeaux referred to in the newspaper
article, is the Francois Quebedeaux, son of Francois Quebedeaux and Celeste
LaGrange who married Eliza Marks
